Granger stood in the center of newly designed restaurant. He’d thought Granger’s French bistro design had turned out beyond his wildest dreams. The arched multi-colored glass windows gave old world class to the highly polished bar. The Edison lights that hung from the ceiling and were eloquently matched by the sconces that arched away from the wall.

Carter was on a ladder attaching the last of the wall lights. For weeks now Granger had been finding excuses to be in the construction area on some pretense or another. He’d come close so many times to asking Granger out and now time was running out. The restaurant was almost finished. Granger had found a small house to move into and was just waiting to see if his offer was accepted. The house was in the historic downtown area, so a bidding war had ensued.

His heart jumped as Granger bent over to pick up a dropped tool. Lord the way he looks. What I wouldn’t give to be a pair of Levi’s at this minute.

“Well? Is it everything you imagined when we fined tuned the design?”

Startled, Granger hadn’t realized moving in his direction. I’ve really got to stop getting lost in my head around this man. “It’s more than I thought possible. Everything is beyond my wildest expectations.” He’d meant it too. His original plans were based on the layout of La Patisserie. He’d loved that place and wanted to emulate every nook and cranny. When Carter suggested touches like the arched mirrors behind the bar and using a lighter red oak for the bar area instead of the dark mahogany Granger requested, he relented on the condition that Carter would rebuild and replace the entire thing if he didn’t like it.

“I am so happy to admit I was so wrong about everything.” Granger swallowed hard. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. “I was especially wrong about you.” He paused then pushed forward. “I’d like to make it up in some way. Would – you – maybe – go to dinner – with me?”

Wow, talk about the high school flashback. Granger hadn’t been this nervous about anything. Ever. Yet here he was shaking in the warm space like it was twenty degrees below zero. But it was now December and Granger would be leaving to pick up CJ in a couple weeks. It was now or never.

Carter’s face had a look that was hard to read. The crooked smile was either pleasure or amusement. He couldn’t figure which as he waited patiently for a response.

“I’ve been more that amply paid for my work and you don’t have to keep apologizing. We had a rough start but, were good now. You don’t have to bribe me with food. Well, retract that. I can be bribed with food, especially if everything I’ve heard about French cuisine is true.

He paused and then that slow crooked smile was back. Granger couldn’t help thinking there wasn’t much he wouldn’t do to keep that smile on Carter’s face. The man had endured a hard couple of years losing his home, his business, and his sister-in-law.
